Logos & Branding

What exactly is "Branding", and why do I need a Logo?

Branding generally consists of a Logo, or a visual icon representation of your product, service or name.Branding gives consistancy to the item it represents using a selection of several combined visual elements that promote your product, service or company. It is the visual image that people remember you by. A good branding strategy considers elements such as colour selection, font usage and simplicity, yet it can branch out to include themes such as phrases, slogans, photographic or video movement to communicate your product to people in a way that it is easily identifiable.

For example, when you think of TD Canada Trust, you probably think of Green, and imagery involving rich, green leather furnature with successful looking people. This carefully selected branding inspires you to associate their bank with security, richness and wealth. It is no accident that the shade of green used in their branding and advertising materials is also psychologically associated with ambition and desire.

What makes a good Logo?

Although it is important that you are satisfied with your Logo, an effective logo rarely has anything to do with personal taste. Your Logo should burn an everlasting image in the mind of your customer (or potential customer). It should stand out more than any other similar brand.

Simplicity, colour usage and imagery are paramount elements in a logo. If your logo is too complex, or too bland, it will not perform it's primary function of imprinting a lasting image in the mind of your consumer.

Colour is increadibly important in a Logo. Every colour in the spectrum has a unique and predictable psychological effect on people. Different shades of colours can have very different effects on people depending on their age and gender!

In summary, your logo needs to invoke a specific emotion from your target market, and it needs to be simple and clean enough to create a lasting impression.
